Meet Our Artist
My name is Pieter van Tonder.
I am a fine artist from South Africa and I've been painting full time for almost 20 years; can't believe it. My primary medium is oils on canvas and I create original works with a surreal feel. My paintings are based on imaginary landscapes that feel real. Within these landscape I play with dream elements and a bit of satire. During the pandemic it made sense to diversify so I saddled up my graphic design and illustration skills and took them to the biggest international freelancing platform. This is where Jered Linden found me and contracted me to create black line artworks of US peaks, for trucker caps and bandanas. I was immediately interested because I love mountains, but this project posed a challenge: How to capture these magnificent objects in only black and white? I am used to the full spectrum of color to help me shape mountains in a three-dimensional space. I made some experiments and we found a style that works. It has been a wonderful journey to create these drawings of iconic US peaks; all of which I yet have to scale!
My favorite sketch that I made for Hiker Sight is the Shasta Negative Series.
